Marks A Return to the Band’s Original Improvisational Vision Psychedelic rock collective @thethirdmind return with Spellbinder!, a companion album to last year’s critically praised Right Now! that reconnects the supergroup with the founding concept that first brought its members together: spontaneous musical conversation. Today they share “Reap What You Sow” accompanied by its official video. Featuring vintage imagery interwoven with live performance footage shot by Teemu Sipilä at The Chapel, San Francisco, January 20, 2024. Repost from @davealvinoriginal • Early Monday afternoon, on a tragic day filled with news of violent madness and disturbing, blind hatred from Rhode Island to Australia to California, Jimmie Dale Gilmore called to tell me that Joe Ely had passed away. Jimmie Dale and I discussed how shocked we were by Joe’s death despite knowing for a while that this sad news was coming at some point in the near future. It just seemed unreal to us. We talked about how Joe was a musical force of nature, an extremely talented showman, evocative songwriter, a devilish heartbreaker, a pool hustler and a visionary honky tonk rock and roller (way back before that wasn’t a whole genre of music unto itself). We started to tell stories of the old wilder times with Joe but then stopped when we realized that there are far too many stories to tell. I could tell you crazy stories revolving around the tour when this photo was taken of Joe and I (with the late, great Jesse Taylor) blowing the roof off of the beloved, long gone Houston nightclub, Fitzgerald’s. The Blasters and the Ely band were on a barnstorming, brain altering, battle of the bands tour through the southwest back in the early 80s and...well..There are too many stories to tell. Maybe I could tell you about the last time I saw Joe. The other photo (with Bukka Allen and @jimmiedalegilmore) was taken a couple of years ago when he dropped by at the studio as @jimmiedalegilmore and I were recording our album, TexiCali. On that bittersweet day, it was clear that Joe’s health was declining but even though he was much mellower and slower, both Jimmie Dale and I felt that he’d somehow keep on running forever. Joe and I sat on the porch outside the studio watching the sunset over the oaks and rolling hills, and reminisced about departed friends, old songs, endless drives and sweaty moments of transcendental magic on stage. We also talked about that legendary night in Fort Collins, Colorado, when the Ely band and The Blasters were all staying at the same cheap motel and...well...There are too many stories to tell. ….continued in comments… #joely #davealvin #americanmusic
