The album returns the band to the free-flowing improvisational spirit at the heart of the concept that first brought its members together: spontaneous musical conversation. the hypnotic instrumental title track “Spellbinder” (Tchad Blake Mix) inspired by the Hungarian jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo, whose work has long influenced guitarist David Immerglück. “I’ve been a huge fan of Gabor Szabo my whole life,” Immerglück says. “When the idea came up to record “Spellbinder,” it felt like a no-brainer.” For Dave Alvin, the track captures the essence of what The Third Mind set out to be. “It was not so much about covering Gabor Szabo, but doing an improvised piece of music – that was always The Third Mind concept. If anything, this recording is as close as we’ve gotten to the original concept of the group.”
“Victor Krummenacher has got the goods. But, we’ve always known that. Here, he creates a sound that shapeshifts from sunny technicolor to melancholy monochrome. At once grandly cinematic and deeply intimate, Block Out The Sun is a moodily

Remembering Claudia on her birthday 🌹 “I wondered if I could assemble an abstract film, where ‘Once Upon A Time’-era Claudia Cardinale suddenly enters as the muse and takes us off on a journey back through time in California. Dave Alvin and I are both Southern California natives who’ve seen a lot of change in our home state, so I tried to play with both the nostalgia of youth, that particular sexual longing that goes with youth, and also an existential flight back through time into the last 100 years or so of California; another kind of nostalgia. Hopefully we do our job as musicians, and we take you off on a trip through time, emotion, place and space.” — @krummenacher on creating and directing the video for “Claudia Cardinale”, from the debut album The Third Mind. . #claudiacardinale #thethirdmind #onceuponatimeinthewest #californianostalgia #instrumentalmusic

They honor the improvisational genius of Miles and ‘Trane (just to name a couple), and filter it through a 21st century prism. “The free-form instrumental opener and title track is an eight-minute-plus jam inspired by Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo. It transforms the jazz standard original into a prog-rock/Santana crossover, superbly delivered.” —- @loneso
