I was in something of a state and was listening mostly to classical music and jazz, things like Alan Hovhaness, Arvo Part, Coltrane.... but my music was playing on random as I drove down I-5 and at one point around dusk, Judy Collin’s 1968 version of Pretty Polly played. I pulled into rest stop and thought immediately ‘I need to hear Jesse Sykes sing this song.’... I played it again and looked up who played on the Judy version - Jim Gordon on drums, Steve Stills, Van Dyke Parks on keys, Chris Ethridge on bass, Buddy Emmons on pedal steel, James Burton on guitar... the song was literally screaming for us to play it... it was the first thing I knew would be on our third album the moment I heard it.” - Victor Krummenacher @krummenacher “I was not familiar with the song Pretty Polly I’m embarrassed to say, as it’s an ancient and traditional song. I was instantly intrigued when I heard the Judy Collin’s version because it sounded like The Fairport Convention, and that version was the motif from which we drew from.
